This directory provides a listing of Utah state approved programs for the preparation of professional educational personnel. This publication is intended to be a source of information regarding available educator preparation programs in Utah institutions of higher education.�

Utah Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL) is a teacher preparation program for individuals who currently hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Qualified candidates who wish to teach in an accredited secondary school (middle school, jr. high school, high school), must have a degree MAJOR in a subject taught in Utah secondary schools. University degrees and degree majors are verified through original transcripts that document the degree, the degree major, and the year conferred. Qualified candidates who wish to teach elementary school must have a transcript that documents a broad background of liberal arts content in the areas of language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, the fine arts, physical education, and health. A minimum of 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of applicable credit are required for eligibility.

Many universities offer online or distance learning teacher preparation programs.  When considering online and distance learning programs, ask:

• Does the program license teacher candidates in your state?
• Is your state reciprocal with the program's state?  Some online programs license you in one state, such as Arizona or Florida, and you will need to transfer that license back to the state in which you desire licensure or certification.  This may require additional application or testing procedures.
• Is the entire program available online or just portions?
• Does the program offer financial aid for online courses?  Federal financial aid (e.g., Stafford and Perkins loans) is only applicable to certain accredited online programs.
